Move

Fake Out

A +3 priority Normal-type move that does small damage and forces the target to flinch — only usable on the user's first turn out.

Fake Out is a Normal-type physical move with 40 base power, +3 priority, and a 100% chance to make the target flinch (skip its turn).

The catch: it can only be used on the first turn a Pokémon is on the field. Switching out and back in resets this — so a Pokémon can re-Fake-Out after a switch.

Why it defines doubles

Fake Out is one of the most important moves in VGC for three reasons:

  1. Free turn of disruption. A Fake Out user can shut down an opposing attacker for one turn at the start of a game, while their partner sets up a sweeper, lays Trick RoomTrick RoomstrategyFor 5 turns, slower Pokémon move first. 2. PriorityPrioritymechanicMove priority brackets determine turn order before Speed is checked — +3 Fake Out always moves first, −7 Trick Room always moves last.Click to read more → bypasses speed. 3. Pairs with everything. Fake Out users like IncineroarIncineroarpokemonThe most-used Pokémon in Reg M-A.
