Champions change: Standard Golurk has Iron Fist (boosts punching moves by 20%). Mega Golurk in Champions instead gains Unseen Fist — a shift from an offensive multiplier to a defensive bypass.
Mega Golurk completely changes how protection moves work in its matches. Unseen Fist means that any time an opponent uses ProtectProtectmoveA move that makes the user immune to all moves for one turn. Fails if used consecutively.Click to read more → or Detect, Mega Golurk’s contact moves deal full damage anyway. A Pokémon choosing Protect to buy a safe turn is no longer safe if Mega Golurk’s next move makes contact.
At 145 base Attack, Mega Golurk hits very hard. Earthquake spreads damage across both opponents (though it doesn’t make contact, so Protect still blocks it). Shadow Punch (Ghost STABSTABmechanicSame-Type Attack Bonus: a move deals ×1.5 damage when its type matches one of the user's types.Click to read more →, always hits, makes contact) and High Horsepower (Ground, contact) are the moves that bypass Protect.
Unseen Fist vs. Piercing Drill
Both abilities punish Protect:
- Unseen Fist (Mega Golurk): contact moves deal full damage through Protect
- Piercing Drill (Mega ExcadrillMega ExcadrillmegaPiercing Drill lets contact moves hit through Protect for 1/4 damage — opponents using Protect still take a hit rather than staying fully safe.Click to read more →): contact moves deal 1/4 damage through Protect
Unseen Fist is the more powerful effect. A Pokémon that Protects against Mega Golurk takes the same hit as if it hadn’t Protected at all.
Ground/Ghost typing
Ghost is immune to Normal and Fighting moves. Ground is immune to Electric moves. Together, Mega Golurk resists or is immune to some of the most common attacking types in the format. Its one major weakness to Water (2×) is notable, and Dark and Ghost types hit Ghost for 2×.
What stops it
- Water-type moves — Water hits Ground for 2×. Pelipper and Basculegion directly counter it.
- Ghost and Dark moves — Both hit Ghost for 2×. Opposing Ghost-types and Dark attackers are a problem.
- Low Speed — Golurk has 55 base Speed and Mega Golurk improves but is still slow. It benefits from Trick RoomTrick RoomstrategyFor 5 turns, slower Pokémon move first. Reverses the entire speed game — a strategy that builds teams around very slow attackers.Click to read more → support.
