Tyranitar already appears in 15.4% of teams in Reg M-A — the highest usage of any Mega candidate in the snapshot — because sand teams anchored by Tyranitar and Excadrill are one of the format’s most consistent archetypes. Mega Tyranitar elevates this further: Sand StreamSand StreamabilityAn ability that summons permanent sandstorm on entry, dealing 1/16 HP chip to non-Rock/Ground/Steel types each turn.Click to read more → activates immediately on Mega EvolutionMega EvolutionmechanicOnce per battle, a Pokémon holding the right Mega Stone transforms into a stronger form with new stats, type, and ability.Click to read more →, provides a 50% Special Defense boost to all Rock types in the sand, and turns Tyranitar itself into an enormously bulky physical tank.
What Sand Stream changes on the field
When sandstorm is active, non-Rock, non-Steel, and non-Ground Pokémon lose 1/16 of their maximum HP every turn. Over a four-turn game, that’s 25% chip damage applied passively to most of the opponent’s team — for free, just by having Tyranitar on the field.
The bigger impact is the 50% Special Defense boost to Rock types. Mega Tyranitar’s Special Defense goes from already high to enormous. Special attackers who would normally chip through it with Water, Grass, or Fighting coverage frequently find themselves doing insufficient damage to 2HKO it.
Physical powerhouse
Mega Tyranitar’s Attack stat is exceptional (164 base). Stone Edge, Crunch, Earthquake, Ice Punch, and Fire Punch give it coverage across nearly all types. Stone Edge is the primary STABSTABmechanicSame-Type Attack Bonus: a move deals ×1.5 damage when its type matches one of the user's types.Click to read more → — high power, high risk (low PP, imperfect accuracy) but rewarding when it lands. Crunch applies Dark STAB for hitting Psychic and Ghost types.
Rock/Dark is a strong offensive typing because it has no complete immunities on the attacking side. Ghost-type Pokémon can’t avoid Crunch; Normal-type Pokémon can’t avoid Stone Edge.
Sand team core
The Tyranitar + Excadrill core (present in approximately 16% of teams) works because Excadrill under sand gets Sand RushSand RushabilityDoubles this Pokémon's Speed under sandstorm.Click to read more → — which doubles its Speed. A sand-activated Excadrill becomes one of the fastest Pokémon in the format. Tyranitar sets the weather, Excadrill sweeps. This is one of the most well-tested weather cores in competitive history.
What counters it
- Water-type moves — Water hits Rock for 2×. Pelipper’s rain also directly overrides Tyranitar’s sand when Pelipper switches in, shutting down the weather advantage.
- Fighting-type moves — Fighting hits both Rock and Dark for 2×, giving Mega Tyranitar a 4× weakness to Fighting. Superpower, Close Combat, or any powerful Fighting move needs to be accounted for in team building.
- Grass-type moves — Grass hits Rock for 2×. Less common than Fighting or Water, but present as coverage on many Pokémon.
