Shadow Tag is Mega GengarMega GengarmegaShadow Tag prevents both opponents from switching out — locking the field and forcing the opponent to fight with no repositioning.Click to read more →’s signature ability. While Mega Gengar is on the field, neither opposing Pokémon can switch out voluntarily. They can still be forced out by moves like Roar, Whirlwind, U-turn, or Volt Switch — but the opponent can’t pivot to a better matchup on their own.
Why this is devastating in doubles
Doubles teams rely on switching to:

- Bring in a counter to the active threat (IncineroarIncineroarpokemonThe most-used Pokémon in Reg M-A. - PivotPivotmoveA move that deals damage or applies an effect, then immediately switches the user out — trading position for momentum.Click to read more → a wounded Pokémon out
Shadow Tag locks all of that down. Why it’s not on every team
Mega Gengar’s frailty is the cost — the Mega slot, plus the trade-off that Gengar itself is a glass cannon vulnerable to almost any priority move. Trapping fails the moment Gengar is KO’d.
Counterplay
- Ghost-types are immune to most trapping abilities — but Shadow Tag does trap Ghosts in this format. The exception is built into Run Away–type abilities or Shed Shell items.
- Shed Shell held item lets the carrier switch out regardless of trapping.
- U-turn / Volt Switch / Flip Turn still work — the user is forced out by their own move’s effect, which sidesteps Shadow Tag.
- PriorityPrioritymechanicMove priority brackets determine turn order before Speed is checked — +3 Fake Out always moves first, −7 Trick Room always moves last.Click to read more → Knock Off or strong physical priority can break Mega Gengar before it can lock the matchup.
