Setup

Protect your sweeper for two turns, then nothing survives.

Opening play

Fake Out from Incineroar buys one free setup turn — a single Swords Dance on Kingambit or Quiver Dance on Volcarona is enough to sweep the rest of the game.

Turn 1

Incineroar Fake Outs the biggest threat on the opponent's side. Kingambit uses Swords Dance for doubled Attack — or swap to Volcarona for Quiver Dance if the matchup suits it.

Watch out for

Incineroar

Incineroar

An opposing Incineroar's Fake Out lands on your sweeper's setup turn, giving the opponent a free attack instead. Use Clefable's Follow Me to absorb the Fake Out — let Clefable eat it so Kingambit or Volcarona boosts freely.

Hatterene

Hatterene

Trick Room flips your boosted Speed advantage, and Magic Bounce reflects Taunt back. Incineroar's Fake Out works through Magic Bounce — use it to flinch Hatterene, then follow with Garchomp's Earthquake before TR lands.

Sneasler

Sneasler

The fastest Fake Out in the format flinches your sweeper mid-dance, and Close Combat threatens an OHKO on Kingambit at +0. Lead Clefable so Follow Me absorbs the Fake Out and the setup turn lands clean.

How it works

Setup teams spend the first turns of the game getting one Pokémon to a state where it can't be stopped. A Swords Dance or Quiver Dance doubles attack power; a redirector or Protect buys the turn to do it. The risk is that everything hinges on the sweeper surviving long enough — but when it works, a single boosted Pokémon can end the game in two hits.

Starter team

Reg M-A · 2026

Swords Dance doubles Kingambit's Attack in a single turn. Supreme Overlord stacks a bonus for each fainted teammate, so a late-game Kingambit hits even harder than at full team health. Fake Out from Incineroar buys the free setup turn.

Kingambit
Kingambitdarksteel

Physical sweeper — Swords Dance

@ Lum Berry

Swords Dance doubles Attack. Supreme Overlord stacks bonus power as teammates fall. After one boost most Pokémon drop to a single Kowtow Cleave or Iron Head. Steel/Dark typing resists almost everything the meta throws. Lum Berry cures status before it can disrupt the setup.

Incineroar
Incineroarfiredark

Support — Fake Out + Intimidate

@ Sitrus Berry

Fake Out flinches one opponent for a free Swords Dance turn. Intimidate reduces physical damage coming back at Kingambit. Parting Shot lets Incineroar exit and re-trigger both effects. Sitrus Berry restores HP through the support cycle.

Whimsicott
Whimsicottgrassfairy

Speed control

@ Mental Herb

Prankster Tailwind goes before almost anything, giving Kingambit the Speed to move first post-boost. Encore traps opponents into moves they can't win with.

Talonflame
Talonflamefireflying

Speed control + Taunt

@ Focus Sash

Talonflame's 126 base Speed makes it the fastest Tailwind setter available. Taunt shuts down opposing setup and status moves before they can disrupt Kingambit's sweep.

Clefable

Redirector

@ Leftovers

Follow Me draws single-target attacks away from Kingambit's setup turn. Magic Guard makes Clefable immune to sand chip — it soaks hits cleanly while Kingambit boosts in peace. Leftovers ticks HP back each turn, keeping the redirector healthy through multiple turns of absorbing damage.

Garchomp
Garchompdragonground

Secondary attacker

@ Choice Scarf

Doesn't need a setup turn. When opponents focus on stopping Kingambit, Garchomp punishes from the other slot with Earthquake and Scale Shot.
